iPhone 7 review from an Apple Cynic

Image
Let me get an iPhone. I had never had an Apple product. Not one. The iPhone, iPad, iMac etc. They are beautifully made and popular almost to a fault. They are also very pricey. Way above what I would pay for an electronic device in which have an average service life of 2 years.  Apple as a company is filthy rich and has one of the largest cash reserves. In other words, I did not wish to one of the contributors to their cash reserve. Their technology was not as advanced as claimed by their advertising. Many other mobile phone companies have more advanced technologies and for example, live images was already on my Nokia Lumia 930 in 2014 but was only launched with the iPhone 6S only in Sep 2015. I am sure the Android pundits from Samsung and other companies would agree with this. iPhone as a technology platform was hardly ground breaking. But it pretends to be ground breaking. So why did I buy one? I had been a supporter of Nokia and their Lumia range. In part...

Review: Plantronics M50 Bluetooth headset

Image
"Power On. Battery Medium. Connected." An American accented female voice greeted me when I turn on the Plantronics M50 headset. Another workday for this headset. I have been using this headset for almost a month now and I must say. It is the finest Bluetooth headset I have used so far. I have gotten this headset as a gift from a buddy who files Boeing 777s for a living. He bought it at Costronics in the United States and brought it back for me. User friendliness The sound quality is superb compared to my previous Bluetooth. A first generation Jabra and a Motorola Bluetooth set. The American accented voice reminded me of the "Bitchin Betty" in the F16 Viper fighter jet. The status of the Bluetooth is clearly announced to me once I start up the headset. Battery life, connection, incoming calls or messages are informed effectively through "Bitchin Betty". This surely beats any LCD display or indicator lights in term of intuitiveness. The voic...

Long term test, Nokia Lumia 710: Internet Explorer failed to open multiple tabs.

Image
The Internet Explorer on my Lumia 710 has decided to take a holiday. It has stopped working properly since last Thursday. First it refuses to start up. Even after turning off the phone. After some browsing on the net using the browser Surfer Cube, I realised it is common problem for Windows Phone. I found a solution to correct the start up problem. You have to fix the settings for the Internet Explorer "to open links to other applications in the CURRENT TAB" That way, the Internet Explorer can start up. But the multiple tab function has ceased working. I could only browse websites one page at a time. This is pretty annoying as all my favourite links are saved on Internet Explorer.  I am not able to uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer. This is because the IE is an uninstallable app. The only option now is to reset my phone. Not an option that I relish. Guess I will transfer all my links manually to Surfer Cube for now. Hope Microsoft will look into this pro...

Long Term Test, Nokia Lumia 710

Image
Formula 1/Nokia Technology Windows 8 has been launched just a few days ago and there has been numerous launches for a plethora of Windows 8 gadgets and computers. I feel that it is timely for me to pen down a long term report for my trusty Nokia Lumia 710 that has been in service for more than 6 months. From my earlier post, I have written that I have chose the Lumia 710 due to budget constraints and my need for a worldwide offline navigation system. It also had a " Maserati V8 Flat Crank" processor which drew me to the phone. The question is, have it fulfilled its intended service? The answer is a unanimous yes! I shall categorise the report in the following subsections. Popularity True enough, the Lumia is a rare sight in Singapore. I have only known two other person who owns another Lumia. Both are elderly and bought it as a replacement for their older basic phones. If Iphones, Samsung S3s and S2 were Toyotas, Hondas and BMWs, then the Nokia Lumia will b...

Panoramas of the World through Nokias

Image
Berlin, Germany, E72 Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic, E72 Dresden,Germany E72 Westin Siray, Phuket, Thailand,, E72 MacPherson Canal, Singapore, Lumia 710 Trailer along highway in Slovakia, E72 The old E72 had a superb camera function, it has a panoramic function which stitches multiple images from it 5mps camera (main camera, as Nokia calls it. Sounds like a main gun on an M1 Abrams tank which sounds cool) I missed the function in the Lumia 710. Here are the views of the world that I have fired using the main gun, sorry, main camera. The last photo however, taken in Singapore was from the Lumia 710. A newfound app seems to be able to replicate the function. Thank you Nokia for the memories...
